Welcome to the first issue of BSUK's new Hot Corner e-newsletter. Hot Corner is a restyling of our Baseball and Softball Bulletins, and will bring straight to your inbox the hot headlines from the BSUK newswire. Much has been happening in recent weeks, with the GB Baseball Team at the World Cup, changes to the Board of the British Baseball Federation, and a stepped-up campaign by GB Women's Softball to raise funds for their 2010 World Championship appearance.

Team GB reflects on the Baseball World Cup

Members of the Great Britain baseball squad have had some time to reflect on the team's experience at the 2009 Baseball World Cup this September, one that very few GB baseball squads have been lucky enough to enjoy previously - the opportunity to test themselves against some of the best hardball-playing countries in the world. Despite leading the team through one of the most successful phases in its history, the Great Britain Head Coach and General Manager have also voiced their concerns about the programme's future.

Three new BSUK staff members take up their posts

Three new members of BSUK's regional and national development staff have started their jobs at the beginning of October: a new National Development Manager, a Regional Development Officer for the Midlands and a temporary Regional Development Officer for London and the South East.

University baseball tournaments signal development focus on higher education

The British University Baseball Association held its annual Fall Cup and Fall Shield tournaments over the past two weekends in Hemel Hempstead and Nottingham. University baseball is growing, but both baseball and softball will grow even faster in higher and further education over the next few years as BSUK focuses a major development effort on these institutions. In this article, BSUK National Development Manager John Irving explains how this development project will work.

An era in Solent Softball comes to an end

A defining era in the history of softball on the south coast of England will come to an end next February with the resignation of Solent Softball League Chair Andy "Beefy" Burgess after 10 years in the job. Andy's not going anywhere: he'll still be playing, he'll remain on the League Committee and he'll be concentrating on recruitment to help the league grow. But his successor will have a lot to live up to: the Solent League won two Glover Cup awards for progressive development during Andy's reign, and Andy himself won a personal Glover Cup for long-standing service to softball. New BSUK coach tutors will increase coach-training capacity in both sports

Thirteen coaches from baseball, slowpitch and fastpitch spent four days early in October gaining a Certificate in Tutoring Sport qualification, and will now form the core of BSUK's coach-training capabilities. Attending the course were BSUK Regional Coaches and representatives from the Great Britain National Fastpitch and Baseball Programmes and Bracknell and Herts Baseball Clubs.

There's history in British baseball team names

What's in a name? When it comes to British baseball teams, past and present, Joe Gray from Project Cobb -- the organisation dedicated to British baseball history -- has been trying to find out. Information on the background to team names can be dug out from club histories, recollections of old-time players or by sheer luck, and some fascinating stories have already been uncovered. But Project Cobb wants help from the current baseball community to solve the mystery behind even more team monickers.

London Indoor Softball League is looking towards the spring season

Even though the autumn season of the 2009-2010 London Indoor Softball League is only halfway through, registration for the spring season will begin in just a few weeks on a first-come, first-served basis. Due to overwhelming demand, BSUK has already created an additional indoor league and operates a weekly Scratch Team that offers playing time to newbies and players without a squad.

BSUK moves towards the creation of dedicated facilities for baseball and softball

Capital funding earmarked for the creation of dedicated baseball and softball facilities is being provided by Sport England through BSUK's 2009-2013 Whole Sport Plan, and the first steps -- development of a Facility Strategy and the creation of a Facilities Steering Group -- are now under way. The idea is to create a number of strategically placed and closely supported Regional Centres where the needs of the baseball and softball communities for competition, development and recruitment can be served.

BSUK publishes Annual Review and 2008-2009 Accounts

BaseballSoftballUK has published an illustrated Annual Review of the year that ended on March 31, 2009 and has also published audited accounts for the twelve months to that date. Both documents can be downloaded from the BSUK website, and links are available if you go to the story. The Annual Review details BSUK's development and operations work during 2008-2009, and looks forward to development work to come through 2009-2013 Whole Sport Plan funding from Sport England. The audited accounts give our communities a chance to understand how BSUK fared financially in 2008-2009. The Annual Review also contains some excellent photos from recent activity in both sports.

Cast your vote for the "Slowpitch Tournaments of the Year"

What makes a great co-ed slowpitch tournament? What makes you come away from a tournament with a warm glow of satisfaction and the feeling that you want to go back next year? The British Softball Federation has decided to find out which tournaments rank highest as far as teams and players are concerned, and it will add two "Tournament of the Year" awards to the other prizes given out at the 2010 AGM in Manchester: one award for one-day tournaments and another for two-day tournaments. Northwich Baseball Club is born from the Rudheath Majestics

The Rudheath Majestics Baseball Club started life a few years ago as a means of helping children make the sometimes awkward transition from primary school to secondary school. But under the charismatic leadership of Ioan Said, the club has grown and expanded its horizons. There have been competition trips abroad and increasing success on the field. Now the organisation is changing its name to the Northwich Baseball Club and moving to a new and better field at Moss Farm in Northwich, from where it hopes to introduce the sport to four new area high schools next year.
